The 18th Asian Games are currently going on in the Indonesian city of Jakarta, and India claimed a gold medal on the very first day of the games.
International multi-sport events, including Asian Games, are one place where India has not been a great force to reckon with.
We stand nowhere when compared to countries like the USA, Canada, and even China, who bag scores of medals at such events.
However, for the past few years, India’s performance in sports has been continuously on an upswing.
India is showing National Talent in International Games, especially in particular sports like shooting and wrestling.
India won a gold medal in Asian games 2018
The medal came from a sport Wrestling, which has been one of the country’s reliable source of medals.
Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia bagged the medal for the country in the Men’s 65 kg freestyle category.
He won by defeating Japan’s Takatani Daichi in a hard fought out final match.
Bajrang previously defeated Khasanov Sirojiddin of Uzbekistan, Fayziev Abdulqosim of Tajikistan and Mangold’s Batchuluun Batmagnai to set the gold medal match with Daichi.
Bajrang Punia hails from Jhajjar district of Haryana and has been a consistent performer at the international stage.
He was also the gold medalist at this year’s Commonwealth games in the same category.
Meanwhile, India had opened its overall medal account at the games previously on the day.
It is with shooters Chandela and Ravi securing the bronze in the 10m Air Rifle mixed team event.
Congratulatory messages for Punia, Chandela and Ravi started pouring in all over social media after the respective wins.
The PM has also has congratulated all the Indian medalists from day 1 for having made the country proud.
With largest and most well-prepared teams at the Asian Games 2018, the medal prospects of the country look bright.
In the 2014 Asian games held in Incheon, South Korea, India had finished at the 8th spot in the medal tally.
