In an innovative approach to generating solar power, a 450-kilowatt-hour (kWp) Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant has been set up at two-wheeler parking area of Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32.
This two-wheeler parking in the Block-M of GMCH-32 is open parking of about 27,000 square feet area where two-wheelers get parked in the open which causes degradation of vehicles in summer.
With installation of this solar power plant, the parking has become shaded parking and parked vehicles will suffer no damage in summer.
This plant, inaugurated by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory Chandigarh, VP Singh Badnore on Wednesday, would generate 5,40,000 kWh of solar energy per year , which is equivalent to reduction of 372 metric ton of CO2 and in turn equivalent to planting of 40,386 trees per year.
An initiative under Climate Change Action Plan, this 450 kWp plant has been installed by Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society at a total cost of this Project is Rs2.74 Crore which includes operation and maintenance charge for 10 years.
The Advisor to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh, ParimalRai, emphasised that the aim should be to achieve target of 50 Mega Watt solar by 2022. He informed that with the installation of this 450 kWp plant, the total achievement for Chandigarh has reached to 16.05 MW.
