Thane Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh said they are probing whether a few politicians had role to play in the extortion racket operated by Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar
The Thane Police is probing the role of a few leaders and corporators in the extortion racket being run by most wanted underworld gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar, who was arrested on Monday night.
Iqbal was taken into custody from his house in Nagpada area in Central Mumbai by a team led by encounter specialist and the anti-extortion cell’s senior police inspector Pradeep Sharma.
Kaskar was arrested after some extortion calls were made in Iqbal’s name to a Thane-based businessman.
Besides Kaskar, two others have been arrested, and five people detained. All the accused have been taken to the Police Commissioner’s office.
Thane Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh told reporters that they are investing Kaskar’s links with some politicians and corporators.
“Threats were given in name of Dawood. Shooters were hired from Bihar to threaten people. Some politicians, corporators could be involved in the extortion racket. We are investigating the matter,” Parambir Singh said,
“We are also probing whether Dawood Ibrahim had any direct or indirect involvement in this extortion racket run by Iqbal Kaskar,” the top cop added.
Iqbal, who was deported from the United Arab Emirates in 2003 , is said to be operating his brother’s real estate business in the city.
He was wanted in a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. However, he was acquitted in both the cases in 2007.
