Dussehara – the festival of win of goodness over evil, of truth over lies, of light over the darkness.
Dussehara is the celebration of the historical event if Lord Ram winning over Ravana and rescuing Sita. Beyond the legend, the festival had never been more relevant, than it is today.
Our world today is engulfed in so much evil, which comes in various forms and manifestations. It is important that we see the festival of win of goodness over evil, in the light of the modern day evils. As we burn the Ravana effigies this Dussehara, we must remember that it is we only who have created it. Just like we, as a society has created so many problems for ourselves. We have created hatred against others. We have created boundaries and walls between nations. It is we, who have created gender inequality, and it is we only who have created a conflict with our environment as well. But we must know, of we can create it, we can destroy it as well – just as we do with the Ravana every year!
The festival of Dussehara also has another very important message for all of us, which is very much relevant in the present. Ravana was a worldly scholar, an unmatched powerhouse of knowledge and wisdom. However, his one mistake made him a symbol of evil for the world. Abducting Sita, against here will, just to fulfill his obsession and ego. This transcends to the modern day ideas of respecting women and their consent. There are so many Ravanas still all around us, who need to know through this festival, that no matter what, the Ravana does get defeated at the end, and the truth and goodness always prevail.
Let’s not celebrate Dussehra in just a symbolic way. Let’s just try to engine the message it gives, in ourselves and in our society. Happy Dussehra!
