A country that rapes and molests women will now worship a woman for nine days as Mata Pujan in Navaratri.
Navratri starts today. 9 days, when men and women across the country will worship the goddess. We will worship the goddess in her different manifestations, which represent nothing but the various shades of womanhood. We will worship her as the most powerful. As the source of happiness and prosperity. Also, we will worship her as our protector from the evils.
However, in a parallel world, we will continue to malign our women. We, as a society will continue to kill women in the womb. We will continue to rape them, harass them and take away from them their rights. Also, we will not shy away from labeling women as lesser beings and reducing them to the pleasers of the more powerful sex.
No matter how much we try to hide this and shun it under the carpet of religion and culture, this remains the truth. It is the truth, and it will emerge. This is not irony, this is sheer hypocrisy.
It is not about undermining or ridiculing the festival. The festival of Navratri and Durga Puja, along with all other festivals where we worship the female manifestations of God, form an integral part of our rich cultural heritage. However, its high time that begins to reflect the richness of our culture and regions in our day to day lives. It is high time that we implement, what our culture teaches us – respecting the women and protecting their dignity. We must not let ourselves appear as a society of hypocrites who would worship the womankind for 9 odd days, only to be adjudged the worst when it comes to respecting the women, in real.
With the festive season just kicking off, let’s take a moment to think and introspect. This Navratri lets become better and start respecting the goddesses all around us.
