Windows constitute one of the most underprivileged and ignored sections of our society. From financial troubles to the emotional void left by the husband, from an upbringing of the children, to ensure the daily ration – the pain area of a window is massive and does not generally get noticed. Social stigma is another big challenge that windows in our society have to face.
To improve the lifestyle of widowed women and uplift their social status, the district administration of Gurugram (Haryana) has taken an exemplary initiative, which needs to be replicated all across the country.
What is the Widow Cell?
Widow cell has been constituted with the idea of bringing together all the window women who need help, at one platform. Windows with income less than 3 lakh rupees per annum will be eligible to get registered under the widow cell. Not only will they be made aware of the various welfare schemes run by the government for the widows, but they will also be provided with subsidized loans of up to 50 thousand rupees.
Skill Training @ Widow Cell
One of the primary motives of the window cell is to help widow women stand on their feet and become financially empowered. For this purpose, the widow cell will run special short-term skill training programs for such women. Here, the women will be trained in works like stitching, sewing, tiffin service, pickle making, housekeeping, taxi/auto driving, baking, etc. through 60-day short term courses. Such skills will help the women find a job for themselves, or start their own small businesses.
The identity of the women who wish to join the cell will be ascertained through proper verification and identification.
The widow cell, if implemented with the right intent, can be a revolutionary step towards improving the lives of the widow women. And remember, when you empower a woman, you empower the entire family and society.
